This may well be a rather scarce set which was for sale in Anthony Horderns’, a large Sydney department store. The set looks similar to a 1900’s Jaques cast metal Staunton set already in my collection with a nice polish finish and the pieces in black and mottled brown. The set appears to have been advertised in Chess World, an Australian magazine in December 1946 priced at £2 19s 6d – no mean sum at that time.
The king measures 4 inches tall and the crosses unfortunately have snapped off. Purchased from Napier Antiques in Napier, New Zealand in December 2018, a cracking buy – delighted with it!
Collectors please note: the vast majority of sets described as ‘bakelite’ (type!!!) are moulded and nothing like the quality finish of this set.
