This interesting Regence set, – probably made in the early 20th century- , may well be a one-off. Pure speculation on my part?
The set has a fairly basic finish, not polished, and who has one?! I saw this set as a collector’s opportunity offered on Ebay recently by ‘Old Games of Chess’. No nonsense type claims, well photographed, and it was open to offers, so I decided to BITE! Once the deal was concluded
I tried to recall just about every Regence set that I have ever seen, (probably well over a
thousand), but nothing like this monster.
The boxwood set weighs about 6 kilos and the king is 19 cms high, base width 6 cms.
The set came with a box which was at best was in OK condition and I doubt the original one thus giving no clues to the maker. The knights are stamped on their base undersides with a type of R /E ?! which might be of help in tracing its maker and origin – help from fellow collectors re its origin and maker would be much appreciated please! 😁😁
