A recent purchase from Ebay, this unusual looking set is best described as a hybrid one. With a King height of almost 5 CMS and base width of 3 CMS. The kings and queens have a type of English pattern looking shape (debatable of course), but the bishops and knights are certainly English pattern. The pawns have rather large looking ball knops for their size, and the rooks could be called Staunton. Getting these sets on the cheap is close to impossible and they are scarce. I have only seen three sets similar to this one. The late Garrick Coleman offered another one years before he left us, and I have a similar- looking one. I also noticed that esteemed fellow collector Jon Crumiller has an identical set:-

When this cute baby was offered on The Bay, I used my ‘sawn off shotgun’ method as it was a must have item! Phew, I succeeded, but was never confident in getting this scarce type of set. One never knows what will happen in the final seconds at Ebay auctions. The small size of the pieces and their style adds greatly to the set’s appeal.
