A Boxwood and Rosewood 19th century St George pattern chess set

This quality set was a recent purchase from Bamfords Auctions. With a 5.5cms king it is nicely turned in both boxwood and rosewood:-

Despite being of small size, there was interest showing by reaction activity on The

Saleroom. The set has no maker’s evidence but most likely

came from well known London makers ..
who knows?

On a distant past visit to Bloomsbury Auctions, and as a new kid on the collecting block,

I remember showing a similar looking set to the esteemed Gareth Williams. He raved about the quality of the items I brought to show fellow collectors. Still, being greedy (let’s be honest here), I wanted another one!
All I can say i don’t see such cuties out there very often – at least one on Tim Millard’s Antique chess sets, and no doubt sold. Ladies with small fingers might have enjoyed handling the delicate looking pieces and no doubt dismissed oversight claims by sore losers over the board – who knows what might have happened between husbands & wives?

The most precise description of ‘scarce’ rather than ‘rare’ is best used here.

A view shared by some fellow collectors with myself is that no doubt the skill
of the turners in creating these beauties can only be admired .
