At the recent Oxford Chess Collectors International (CCI) meeting, I managed to acquire this sought after
Dutch set. With a king 10 cms high, the pieces are made of fruitwood – a light substance-, and the decorative finials are
made of bone.

These sets are very attractive, and it is no surprise that the chessmen are sought after-I had to wait some 20 years to finally
get one. The exchange deal that I managed to pull off to capture this lovely set in excellent condition was indeed a fortunate
treasure.
Sometimes a collector needs to be patient, a bit like a LYON hiding in the grass waiting
for prey then pounce if and when the possibility exists!
The more I look at our European neighbours’ collectable chessmen the greater degree of appreciation I have for
these delightful items.
Artistic, stylish, with the rooks being my favoured pieces, the bone finials are such a lovely touch.
