German silver plated chess set from 1896

I first saw this set type at a Bloomsbury sale back in 2005, so I kept a ‘cyclops’ eye on it so it became a bucket list item. This painted glass board has the perfect square size for the pieces, and boy oh boy it fits like a custom made glove on it! So when I purchased the lovely board on E-bay for a great price some 6 months ago, finding a set for it became a mission. This purchase from the Luke Honey website  (https://www.lukehoney.co.uk/) was as safe as houses as Luke is very well known to all collectors worldwide, plus his description is important to note:-

‘A German silver-plated chess set by the Wurtembergische Metallwarenfabrik, Geislingen, 1896 – One side in gilt, kings and queens with crowns, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as turrets, pawns surmounted with ball finials, the king 6.5cm high, the pawn 3.9cm high, maker’s mark to the underside of the base, in the original cardboard open presentation box, 31cm wide.
Stock Reference: MJ 1537
Reference: Schach Partie Durch Zeiten und Welten, Edition Braus, 2005, figure 234.’

The square size of this lovely board is 4 square cms, as getting it wrong is ruinous – the pieces need to  “breeeeeaaaaathe”!
