A Quality Staunton Chess Set

A recent purchase from AntiqueChessShop.com. This is a quality Staunton set- calling it a ‘Staunton style’ is a nonsense. Made of boxwood and ebony with the king just under 3 inches in height, it is unweighted, Unfelted – the common use of ‘weighted and felted’ does not impress me one little bit nor the so-called ‘laquered finish’ which will never beat the genuine French polished finish. The very idea of ‘unrestored‘ is laughable, as what matters greatly is the quality of the restoration work and of course the price paid for it. A significant number of the sets in my collection have had some form of restoration work, and the price to be paid will be taken into account. These claims being made and the prices being charged by some sellers are so ridiculous that getting a set like this becomes far more affordable to the many out there as three rather ordinary looking sets can cost more than I paid for this one. As in my early stages of collecting , I paid serious attention what was written in chess collecting books – these current selling aids
might be worrying to the naive out there. Most weighted sets are felted, and it’s rather like saying a car has 4 wheels – that is how utterly stupid such claims look to experienced collectors.
