Antique Silver Staunton Chess Trophy

This rather nice looking horse head claimed to be a chess trophy by Henry Moreton
of Birmingham 1908, and is a recent Saleroom purchase at Ryedale Auctions.
It has been suggested that the knight was copied from a Jaques Steinitz but the more pronounced horse mane would suggest to me that it was influenced by a Marshall knight.
A decent look at the British chess sets site offering gratis images of Jaques knights
is most useful for interested parties –
thank the good Lord for generous collectors who offer us all a wonderful selection  of fantastic chessmen.
I’ve seen the daft idea of offering male prize winners at recent important chess
tournaments flowers! – absolutely nuts in my humble opinion. Flowers die, player cash winnings get spent, but this trophy lasts!
This beauty is over 100 years old thus a genuine antique.
Needless to say, as a collector I never as a player played at a level to deserve such  booty – cash talks hence this purchase.
The knight measures width 4 cms, head height 5 cms, base measurements excluded.
Trophy creators note:-  back in the old days they had style and class hence numbers of such treasures have survived.
Important to also note that as as a collector of chess items I have had some excellent dealings with a number of auction houses via The Saleroom and have never been disappointed with the service
provided- no commission grumbling from me! 😁
