A costly acquisition from Ebay some months ago and there was plenty of interest.
The item was described as Jaques??! Simply wrong, as the knight is clearly a BCC Royal horse.
Further evidence that sellers don’t know everything:-
Some years ago I noted a similar looking trophy being offered at a Philips
Auctions, again with no BCC information offered. Sold on Tuesday May 2nd for 260 pounds plus commission etc.
At first my buggered memory forgot that the bases on both trophies were
different-warning: don’t play golf in a Belfast pub and then drop a stroke-a rather serious error on my part!
Still, it’s a wonderful thing to have in my collection, since it was a must-have item
On that occasion the Ebay gods favoured me-phew!
The wooden based silver plated trophy measurements are base to head 8.25cms, base width 6cms.
Thanks to Jonathan Angell via a Facebook Staunton group, I found out that the BCC trophy winner 1901-02 winner
R Preston was a member of Barrow Chess Club.
Perhaps the media will start giving collectors the credit for the knowledge
they possess and are more than willing to share it to others my advice is to join the CCI.
This business of awarding sellers golden calves for cash earned undermines the vast
knowledge we collectors have, earned by sheer hard work.
