The chunky ivory backgammon pieces are almost 1cm thick and 5cms in width, with the wooden counters likewise. The 16x 16 inch playing surface is housing a French version of a Saint George pattern set in boxwood.
Having once chopped a tree down, my expertise in woods is limited – I’ve not a clue of the wood type, but having examined a host of auction catalogues, my best guess is mid-19th century, either French, Southern German or Austrian.
A very fortunate eBay purchase in recent weeks, but this buy is why I love hunting on the Bay!
