when i first saw this set on Tim Millard’s antique chess shop .com site i simply burst out laughing and simply had to buy it. just compare the side view of a gorilla in your mind and see the sense of humour the carver must have had.probably dating from the late 19th century this unweighted boxwood ebony set with a 3.25 inch king is another favourite.
over the years i have purchased over a dozen sets from Tim and been a very happy collector in my dealings with him.this set appears to be scarce as I have yet to see an identical one but Tim informed me that he once had another similar set. these quirky Staunton sets are becoming harder and harder to get as competition is rather fierce when they pop up for sale.
