European Chess Set

This rather interesting and scarce looking set was a purchase at the friendly CCI Chess Market.

The market is a friendly gathering with a few collectors offering a selection

of sets for sale. No pressure to buy, pleasing descriptions, no hype nor flamboyant nonsense,

with generally accurate information offered. Chancers beware as other collectors

present will expose the rogues since we collectors talk to protect each other!

At the Oxford meeting I managed to purchase this set and a sought after Dutch set at decent prices, and I part exchanged a lovely vegetable ivory prize set to acquire both sets with a cash payment added.

Thank the good Lord for my most capable wife who managed the transactions, as

when it comes to internet stuff I am a Dinosaur or best described as a Dino – Sore – Ass – a good man knows his limitations.

This set is turned in a light wood with a lovely patina, kings being 9.25 CMS, no felts stated to inflate the price, and unweighted to boot.

With minimal damage, a well mentioned replacement pawn was no deterrent to my

interest, as such interesting sets don’t become available too often. The set came with a nice box, and I am unsure if it is the original one but no matter.

The current selling practice of stating the sets are weighted and felted and being described as a ‘full set’ is rather irritating to say the least.
