when I won this unusual looking set on E Bay a number of years ago, i decided to call this hybrid set ‘friar tuck’ all because of the fat bishops.
the unweighted pieces made of boxwood? ebonised for the black side, is a nice chunky playing set .
a real bonus is to have the set’s original box sold by S A Gripps Stationer and Fancy Repository, which may well date from the mid to late 19th century. European sets can come in boxes where the lids on the wide side close the box, or east to west.
these sets appear to be scarce, and I have seen at least a couple of them crop up.
With a 7cms king, this is a superb set for playing with.
