This charming set was sold on ebay as ‘bakelite’ but 30 seconds of study suggested otherwise to me – the set was made by the Oralite Company of Thornton, Blackpool. The firm ceased trading in 1967. A seller on ebay offered a similar but not identical set with the company information stamped on the box.
Recent observation: I have a limited number of chess sets with a company logo on them and have grave doubts that any of them were actually made by the companies in question. I also have a matching board for this set made of the same unknown plastic type? material.
